The other day, one of my daughters shared a meme where a $5 shipping charge caused a shopper to abandon their online shopping order. I giggled, because this particular daughter must have found her twin, since she’s been known to do the exact thing.
It got me to thinking about the abandoned carts I sometimes see on my online shop’s back end, and I wondered if shipping is what halted the sale. Shipping can add up. In the same token, not everyone who fills a cart online plans to complete the sale. But I do know shipping can play a huge role.
Yes, it costs us to ship, too, especially those of us with small businesses. Some companies can absorb this cost better than others, depending on their profit margins and shipping contracts.
As orders grow in weight, shipping costs also grow. The post office, for their part, has steadily increased shipping rates, sometimes, more than once in a year. FedEx and UPS have always been more expensive—however, the post office is catching up.
